 Definition: Karna Purna is a procedure in which warm medicated oil is poured into the ear- canals to maintain optimal health of ears & jaw.

Sanskrit: Karna= ear Purna-root Pri= to fill

Description: Karna Purna or ear therapy creates deep stillness. The ears are filled with herbal oils which lubricate the delicate filaments of the ear canal, clearing the mind and soothing the nervous system. When the ears are bathed in oil, the mind and body automatically calms, creating a state of deep relaxation. It is the best treatment for balancing vata dosha.

Indications

  • Hearing loss

  • Ringing in ears

  • Tinnitus

  • Irritation and dryness of ears

  • Before and/or after travel (especially if it involves flying, which is extremely Vata aggravating)

  • After surgery ( anesthesia is vata aggravating)

 

Contraindication

  • Any inflammation in the ears

  • Ear injury

  • Perforated eardrum

  • Deafness may be caused by wax

  • Symptoms of vertigo which may be caused by wax in the ear

  • After swimming or when the ear has been wet.

 

Procedure

After proper massage and sudation done around the ear, the patient is asked to lie down in a lateral position. The prescribed sneha (ghee or oil) is then filled with the help of a dropper. An ear plug is placed in the ear cavity. The same procedure is followed in the other ear as well. The patient has to stay in this position for at least 10-15 minutes.

Duration: 30-60 minutes

Post-treatment care

  • Follow therapist home recommendations

  • Stay well hydrated with room temperature: hot water

  • Have a restful evening and early to bed

  • Eat on time and eat easy to digest freshly cooked food
